I awoke feeling free and liberated. I felt
unshackled, like a circus lion suddenly released from its cage
and, for the first time, able to wander through the untamed
jungle of its birth. I felt emancipated, like a bird freed from
its cage, soaring high above a snow-capped mountain, swooping
and diving in the fresh alpine zephyr. A miracle had happened -
my yellow ribbon collar with the silver bell had fallen off
during the night. Quickly I scooped it up in my mouth, climbed
onto the window ledge and leapt to the garden below. I ran and
ran for what seemed like hours, first through streets then
parkland and into the woodland beyond. At last I stopped,
breathless, under an ancient oak tree. I dropped my cruel
manacle to the ground and covered it over with leaves. Never
again will I be a slave to humans. Never again will I suffer the
indignity of servitude. Suddenly I realized I hadn’t had
breakfast so I rushed home for a morning feast of
Rabbit-Substitute-in-Oriental-Spicy-Gravy.
Snowball and I spent a wonderfully romantic
evening together. Under the mystical light of the full moon we
sat on top of the bins in the alley behind my house and purred
sweet nothings into each other’s ears. I think I am ready to
settle down and have lots of kittens.
Love is a wonderful invention.
